With its vibrant culture, stunning architecture and breathtaking landscapes, this destination offers endless opportunities for capturing the perfect shot. Seville, the capital of Andalusia, is a photographer’s dream come true. From the historic Alcazar Palace to the iconic Plaza de España, every corner of this city is a work of art waiting to be captured on camera. Andalusia, on the other hand, is known for its charming white-washed villages, rolling hills, and dramatic coastline, providing a diverse range of subjects for your photography.
This 7 day private photography tour follows a circular route beginning in Seville, then continues to Ronda, Granada and Cordoba before returning to and ending in Seville. Run by Laurie Cohen, a professional photographer with over 3 decades in leading photography workshops around the world, you will experience the best of this region of Spain through the eyes of a professional instructor. Being a private tour, it is customised to your skill level, subject preferences and requirements. Likewise, multi-day extensions to visit Barcelona and rural Catalonia can also be accommodated for.
Day 1 | Seville Alcazar, Plaza de Espanya
Starting in Seville, our photo adventure commences with the hospitality and warmth of the local people, set amongst a backdrop of art and culture. From historic buildings to the colorful streets lined with orange trees, we will focus on capturing the vibrant hues of the buildings and the lively atmosphere of the city. Seville offers endless opportunities for capturing breathtaking images. This city has a legacy of over 700 years of Moorish rule, which is evident in the exquisite architecture. The Alcazar Palace may be one of the finest examples of this architectural style, and was given the status of a UNESCO World Heritage site. Other beautiful landmarks are the iconic Plaza de España, Plaza de Toros and the Seville Cathedral – the site of Christopher Columbus’ tomb. In the evening we will enjoy a dinner of Andalusian cuisine with an authentic display of flamenco dancing.
Day 2 | Seville Metropol Parasol, Santa Cruz, Jewish Quarter
Our second day in Seville starts with some fantastic photography at the Metropol Parasol – the futuristic looking structure that creates wonderful shadows and directional lighting, and a contrast to the Gothic and Moorish architecture of the previous day. It also makes for a beautiful background to people walking underneath it, which also add scale to the structure. Its unique forms and intricate design offer a plethora of angles and perspectives to explore. The modern architecture juxtaposed against the historic cityscape creates a striking contrast to the city’s past.
Today we also explore the narrow streets of the historic Santa Cruz neighborhood. Known for its charming alleys, flower-filled balconies, and hidden courtyards, this vibrant area is a treasure trove of photographic opportunities, from candid street photography of the locals set amongst beautiful, white washed houses, to the winding, narrow alleyways that lead through the ancient Jewish Quarter.
Day 3 | Seville, Setenil de las Bodegas, Ronda
Today, after checking out of our Seville hotel in the morning, we head to Setenil de las Bodegas – a stunning location comprising of whitewashed houses tightly packed together within the surrounding rock. This classic Andalusian village is famous for these Troglodyte cave houses carved into overhanging cliffs on the edge of the village. Continuing our journey, we head to Ronda – one of the oldest and most beautiful towns in Spain, located on the edge of a canyon. The iconic bridge, known as Puente Nuevo offers spectacular views of the houses overhanging the gorge and surrounding countryside. From the stunning views, to it’s historical bullring, to it’s charming cobbled streets, there is much to photograph in Ronda. We will wander the historic quarter during the beautiful afternoon light after enjoying some local cuisine. We will stay overnight in Ronda before continuing our journey.
Day 4 | Granada Albaicin, Mirador de San Nicolás
Today we head to Granada – one of the best known cities of the Iberian peninsular. En route, we will stretch our legs and allow some time to visit Dolmen de Menga, a megalithic tomb and burial site that dates back thousands of years. On arrival to Granada, we will check in to our hotel and enjoy a wonderful lunch before discussing our plans for the next two days in the city. With its rich history, stunning architecture, and vibrant culture, Granada is a photographer’s dream destination. A city that seamlessly blends the old-world charm with modern-day vibrancy, there are no shortages of picturesque spots waiting to be captured through your lens. In the afternoon we will head to the Albaicín neighbourhood where we explore the labyrinth of streets and alleyways, where every corner holds a hidden gem waiting to be photographed. At Golden Hour we will capture the stunning views of the Alhambra from the Mirador de San Nicolás.
Day 5 | Granada Alhambra
On Day 5 we will head to the Alhambra Palace, a highlight of our trip. Offering an opportunity to capture stunning architectural details and intricate designs, the palace’s blend of Islamic and Christian influences provides a unique backdrop for creative compositions. Built in the 14th century, it served as a royal palace, a fortress, and a small city. The intricate designs, beautiful gardens, and detailed carvings showcase the rich history and culture of the Nasrid Dynasty. Today, the Alhambra Palace stands as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, attracting visitors from around the world to marvel at its beauty and historical significance. Repeating patterns and the play of light and shadows in the intricate courtyards and gardens can create captivating images that showcase the beauty of this historic landmark.
Day 6 | Cordoba Mosque Cathedral, Alcazar
Today, we leave Granada and drive to Cordoba. The combination of picturesque landscapes, stunning architecture, and a rich cultural heritage will inspire you get creative with your camera. One of the most iconic landmarks in Cordoba is the Great Mosque-Cathedral, another UNESCO World Heritage site. The intricate arches, ornate columns, and stunning mosaics make for a captivating subject to photograph, with their mesmerising play of light and shadow. Other sites include the Alcazar de los Reyes Cristianos, a fortified palace with beautiful gardens and striking Moorish architecture. Lush greenery, tranquil water features and impressive fortifications provide ample photo opportunities. During afternoon Golden Hour, we will wander through the ancient Jewish Quarter. Dating back to the Roman times, it was during the Islamic rule in the 10th century that it truly flourished. At its peak, it was home to a vibrant Jewish community that formed part of a unique tapestry of cultural exchange. To end our visit to Cordoba, we will photograph views over the Roman bridge. In the evening, we head back to Seville.
Day 7 | Seville Plaza de Espanya
Our last day begins when we head back to Seville and spend time at one of the most iconic locations in the city. Plaza de España is a photographer’s dream. This grand square features a stunning tiled fountain, intricate tile work, and imposing towers. The majestic semi-circular building is sure to make your photos pop with vibrant colors and architectural beauty.
The central building features a series of bridges over a tranquil moat, connecting it to the surrounding area. The walls of the plaza are adorned with colorful ceramic tiles depicting scenes from Spain’s provinces, adding to the beauty and charm of the square. Plaza de España can offer great opportunities for street photography, and is the last location on our Andalusia photography adventure. From here we will say our farewells, unless continuing by extending your trip with us to Barcelona.
