Our popular Photo Tours in Santorini and Milos have now been combined with Athens, resulting in an exciting new Greece Photography Workshop. Our photo adventure runs on May 13-21, 2027, and is led by a photography guide with years of experience in leading private and small group workshops around the world. Santorini, Milos and Athens offer their own unique visual magic, while the combination of breathtaking locations, stunning colors and textures, photogenic seascapes and quaint villages make for an ideal photo vacation. Combine this with a comfortable climate, warm people and excellent cuisine, results in a truly memorable photographic experience!
Athens: Ancient History and Greek Mythology
Our journey begins in Athens, a city that blends ancient history, mythology and philosophy with vibrant contemporary life. The iconic Acropolis still dominates the Athens skyline after 2,500 years, and is included on our day of architectural photography. Narrow streets and colorful facades make for great backgrounds for street photography in the Plaka neighborhood. The popular Monastiraki Square in the Old Town is also a highlight for photographing candid shots of people. Athens offers a rich palette of possibilities for practicing composition and the manipulation of light.
Exploring the mythology of Athens offers a fascinating glimpse into the legends that have defined this city for millennia. A the core of Athenian mythology is the story between Athena – the city’s patron goddess, and Poseidon, the God of the sea. Athena’s presence in Athenian mythology is profound, and the Parthenon is the city’s most famous temple, dedicated to her by the people of Athens, showcasing her central role in both religious and civic life.
Beyond the ruins, the gritty urban decay makes for great backgrounds during golden hour, as the late afternoon light casts shadows and creates depth and separation for your subjects. The combination of authentic neighborhoods, dynamic light and great subjects, results in a great combination for successful street photography. Our Greece Photo Workshop begins and ends in Athens, making your trip more accessible due to the city being an important international travel hub.
Santorini: Dreamy Seascapes and Iconic Blue Domes
Arguably one of the most photogenic locations in the world, the island of Santorini offers a spectacular setting, where cliff-hanging cave dwellings cover the sides of an extinct volcano overlooking the Caldera [large bowl shaped depression caused during a volcanic eruption] and the deep blue waters of the Aegean Sea. Photography here is all about the play of light through the minimalist white-washed buildings as they contrast with the deep blue sea below. Colors and textures are most pronounced during morning and afternoon golden hour.
Santorini transforms as the day ends, when its world-renowned sunsets draw visitors from around the world to witness the beauty of color and saturation in the sky reflecting on the Caldera below. The blue-domed churches that stand out in the foreground create endless opportunities for capturing beautiful compositions during sunrise and sunset.
Milos: Untouched Beauty and Dramatic Coastlines
Raw and authentic, the small island of Milos is one of Greece’s hidden gems. Diverse landscapes, dramatic seascapes and colorful rock formations result in a dream destination for landscape photographers. Rugged cliffs drop down to smooth, colorful beaches, while colorful shapes and textures transform in the late afternoon light. The island’s diverse coastline is dotted with hidden coves and crystal clear waters, creating ethereal images when utilizing slow-shutter exposures as the light fades.
One of the most unique geological formations can be found at Sarakiniko Beach. The smooth white volcanic rock gives the impression of a lunar surface, and contrasts beautifully with the crystal-clear turquoise waters. As well as the excellent photographic opportunities, swimming here is one of our favorite ways to relax when the light is harsh. Another favorite for landscape photography can be found at Firiplaka Beach with it’s striking red sands, creating textures and hues that provide endless photo opportunities.
As well as the stunning landscapes on offer, the charm of Milos can be found in the vibrant colors at locations such as the boat houses of Klima, quaint fishing ports and white-washed houses overlooking the turquoise waters of the Aegean Sea. Our favorite Greek destination for day sailing trips, some of the most stunning volcanic geological formations can be found offshore, where basalt formations rise out of the sea. These are premier locations for snorkeling.
